Heart Suncatchers

We made these heart suncatchers the other day with the kids and one of their friends.  These were super simple to make: the kids sharpened crayons onto wax paper heart cut-outs, and I ironed the cut-outs once complete.  This turned the hearts into beautiful melty art.

How to Turn Melted Crayons into Heart Suncatchers

The kids loved this craft - probably because they got to choose all the colors and sharpen them on their own.

This craft does require an iron, which should be an adult only job.  But the kids can get creative with their color choices and placement of the crayons sharpenings.  (One of my kids insisted that his color layout be just so, and heaven forbid I accidentally change anything.  I was very careful not to jostle that heart.)

Materials

  • crayons
  • a sharpener
  • wax paper
  • an iron (and a towel so that you don't burn the table)
  • scissors
  • string or yarn and a hole punch for hanging your sun catcher

How to Make a Heart Sun Catcher

  1. Cut out two identical heart shapes from wax paper.  (This could be an adult job, unless your kids are old enough to do it themselves.)
  2. Have the kids pick the colors for their sun catchers.
  3. Peel the wrapping off the crayons.
  4. Sharpen the crayons and place the sharpenings onto a wax paper heart cutout.
  5. Place an identical wax paper heart cutout on top of the sharpenings.
  6. Place your hearts + crayon sharpenings on top of a towel so that you don't burn your table with your iron.
  7. Iron the hearts.  Definitely an adult job.  Don't let the kids touch the iron.
  8. Iron until all the crayon shavings are melted.
  9. Let the hearts cool.  (This just takes a few minutes.)
  10. Once cool and dried, use a hole punch to punch a hole or two at the top of the heart sun catcher.
  11. Thread some yarn or string through the hole(s) and hang in your window.
