Crochet Polar Bear Hat
This crochet polar bear hat is a breeze to make, and you can probably whip one up in about an hour (or two). These make great gifts for bear fans, or for any kid that you'd like to make just that much more adorable.
This pattern is written for newborn to child sizes, and will fit most kids up to about the age of ten or so (my 7-year-olds can wear the child size hat and the adult small, since the hats have a fair bit of stretch to them).
How to Crochet a Polar Bear Hat
This polar bear hat is made using my basic hat pattern, with some bear parts added on.
For the toddler and child size, I used black buttons as the eyes. For the newborn to 12 month sizes, when kids are more likely to eat the buttons, I crocheted eyes out of black yarn.
Materials
- 1 ball (or less) of medium weight (worsted) yarn in white
- scraps of medium weight yarn in black
- 2 black buttons, if you are using buttons for the eyes
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
Crochet Polar Bear Hat Pattern
To start, find the correct size of my basic crochet hat and make the hat in white.
Next, find the correct size (below) for the ears and snout (and eyes for smaller kids).
Polar Bear Ears
Make 2 ears in white.
Newborn Size
Magic ring, 6 SC in magic ring, join to first SC, chain 2 (6 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each SC, join, chain 2 (12 SC)
Round 3: *2 SC in SC, SC in next 3* repeat around, join, chain 2 (15 SC)
Rounds 4-5: SC around, join, chain 2 (15 SC)
Round 6: *SC2together, SC in next 3* repeat around, join, fasten off (12 SC)
0-3 month and 3-6 month size

In black yarn:

Polar Bear Eyes
For the smaller sizes, if you are worried about a kid eating the buttons, make the eyes out of yarn.
Magic ring, SC 6 in ring, join. (6 SC) Fasten off.
If you want to make the eyes bigger, add a second round before fastening off: 2 SC in each SC around (12 SC). Fasten off.
