Easy Basketweave Scarf Pattern

I made a whole bunch of these cozy basketweave scarves for Christmas this past year and people loved them.  If you choose a nice, soft yarn, this yarn knits up into a cozy, cuddly winter accessory.

The is a super simple and fairly mindless one.  This is a scarf that I can easily knit during meetings, coffee dates, or other things where my brain is paying attention but my hands want something to do.

It's something of a faux-basketweave pattern.  The traditional basketweave has some overlap of the knit and purl rows, giving that gorgeous woven look.  This pattern is made with even-sized squares of knit and purl stitches instead.

This scarf knits up fairly quickly, though of course the longer you make it the longer it will take to complete.

How to Knit a Faux-Basketweave Scarf

This is a really basic pattern repeated over and over again.  Which means it's great for knitting in front of the TV, while out for coffee, at meetings...

Materials

  • worsted weight yarn (I used 2 balls of Caron Simply Soft for this pattern, i.e. 630 yds)
  • 5.5 mm circular needles

Note: This scarf is knitting width-wise, instead of length-wise.  That is why I use circular needles.

You can modify this pattern to use straight needles and knit the scarf lengthwise.  Your scarf will still look the same, but the stitches will point in the opposite direction.
