Kids Crochet Penguin Hat
This cute crochet penguin hat is made with my basic kids crochet hat pattern, and embellished with penguin pieces.
This penguin hat can be made in just a couple of hours - great for last minute kid gifts!

Materials
- light worsted weight yarn (Caron Simply Soft is my absolute favourite)
Yarn in black, white, and a small scrap of orange.
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- 2 black buttons (plus thread and a needle for sewing them on)
- yarn needle for sewing pieces together
Finished size: 17.5 inch circumference; 7.5 inch height
Gauge: 15 stitches and 18 rows in single crochet makes a 4 x 4 inch square
Hat Pattern
Using black yarn...
Magic ring, 12 DC in magic ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (24 DC)
Round 3: *2 DC in first stitch, DC in next stitch* repeat around, join, chain 2 (36 DC)
Round 4: *2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 2 stitches* repeat around, join, chain 2 (48 DC)
Round 5: *2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 3 stitches* repeat around, join, chain 2 (60 DC)
Round 6-16: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (60 DC)
Switch to white yarn.
Round 17: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off (60 SC)
Face
Using white yarn...
Chain 25, SC in 2nd chain from hook, SC to end (28 SC)
Rows 2-9: SC across (28SC)
Row 10: Skip the 1st stitch, SC into each of next 10 stitches, sl st in last stitch
Row 11: Skip the 1st stitch, SC into each of next 8 stitches, sl st in last stitch
Row 12: Skip the 1st stitch, SC into each of next 6 stitches, sl st in last stitch
Row 13: Skip the 1st stitch, SC into each of next 4 stitches, sl st in last stitch, fasten off
Join yarn at other end and repeat rows 10-13.
Beak
Chain 8, SC in 2nd chain from hook and across (7 SC)
Row 2: Chain 1, turn, skip first stitch, SC in next 5, slip stitch in last stitch (5 SC)
Row 3: Chain 1, turn, skip first stitch, SC in next 3, slip stitch in last stitch (3 SC)
Row 4: Chain 1, turn, skip first stitch, SC in next 1, slip stitch in last stitch, fasten off (1 SC)
Assembly
Sew white face piece onto black penguin hat.
Sew beak onto your penguin's face.
Sew two buttons for eyes onto your penguin's face.
