Basic Kids Crochet Hat Pattern
This basic kids crochet hat is the base of so many of the hats that my kids wear. You can make this hat and wear it as is, especially if you find a gorgeous yarn that needs no embellishment. Or you can use it as the base of another hat: try out a ninja hat, a black cat hat, a ninja turtle hat, or a penguin hat.

How to Make a Basic Kids' Crochet Hat
This kids hat is super simple to make and you can whip one up in about an hour.
I ended up making TWO of these - slightly different - patterns. The reason? I have a whole pile of light worsted weight yarn (mostly Caron Simply Soft, which I love!) and a whole pile of heavy worsted weight (like Red Heart Super Saver or Loops and Threads Impeccable). Those two types of yarn do not give the same gauge, and therefore the same hat size.
So below you will find a basic kids' crochet hat pattern for light worsted weight yarn, and one for heavy worsted.
Basic Kids' Crochet Hat in Light Worsted Weight Yarn
