Crochet Watermelon Hat

My son requested a crochet watermelon hat the other day when he say this cute little watermelon Lego figure that we got his cousin for her birthday. Now he wants watermelon everything!

This hat was a breeze to make: a simple double crochet hat turned into a watermelon with a little bit of creative color work.

How to Crochet a Watermelon Hat

This watermelon hat is made with my basic crochet hat pattern with a little bit of extra color work.

Materials

  • weight 4 (worsted) yarn in pink, black, white, and green
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook

Note: you will need a whole ball of yarn in pink, but only scraps in black, white, and green.

See my basic crochet hat instructions for the gauge, size, and instructions for the basic hat. Then find the color-work instructions below for your specific hat size.

How to Make the Watermelon Seeds

To make the watermelon seeds, make one double crochet stitch in black, spaced fairly evenly around the hat.

The seeds turn out best when you begin the color change at the end of the last stitch:

  • with pink yarn: yarn over and pull through (you should have 3 loops on your hook); yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook
  • switch to black yarn: yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on your hook

Then repeat the process with colors reversed.

  • with black yarn: yarn over and pull through (you should have 3 loops on your hook); yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook
  • with pink yarn: yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on your hook

Watermelon seed complete!

Note: it works best to have 5 or 6 or 7 little balls of black yarn, so that you are not using one strand of black for the whole hat.
